My Child Is Nonverbal. What Are Our Options in Dubai?
Your child has things to say. Here is how we help them say it — with or without speech.
A nonverbal or non-speaking autistic child can start communicating now, not someday. The most effective first step is an AAC assessment: finding the communication tool — a picture system, an app or a speech-generating device — that gives your child words today while spoken language keeps developing underneath. Research is consistent that AAC supports speech rather than replacing it. Starwalkers Clinic in Dubai Healthcare City does detailed AAC assessments and device trials, alongside gestalt language therapy for children who communicate in scripts and sounds. Sessions are AED 150–199, and no referral or diagnosis is needed to begin.
Nonverbal today does not mean silent forever
Parents usually hear the word nonverbal at diagnosis, and it can land like a verdict. It is not one. It describes where your child is now, not where they will be. Many non-speaking children go on to speak; many others become fluent, expressive communicators through a device or pictures; most importantly, every child can move from frustration to being understood.
Two things are worth saying plainly. First, not speaking is not the same as not understanding. Many non-speaking children understand far more than they can show, which is why we presume competence and talk to your child, not over them. Second, most “nonverbal” children are more precisely minimally speaking: they may have sounds, scripts from cartoons, or a handful of words that come and go. All of that is language, and all of it is something a therapist can build on.
Why we start with AAC, not more speech drills
When a child has few or no spoken words at three, four or five, repeating single-word drills harder is rarely the answer. The urgent job is giving them a way to communicate now, because communication is what protects a child from frustration, meltdowns and being underestimated — and because using language in any form is what grows language.
AAC stands for augmentative and alternative communication: everything from pointing to symbols on a board, to an app on an iPad, to a dedicated speech-generating device. The best system depends on your child’s motor skills, vision, language level and interests, which is why a proper AAC assessment matters more than buying the most recommended app. At Starwalkers the assessment includes trialling real devices and apps with your child before you spend anything on one.
The worry every parent has: will a device stop my child from talking? The evidence says the opposite. Decades of research consistently find AAC supports spoken language development. A child who taps “open” and hears the word modelled every time is getting more language practice, not less.
If your child repeats phrases and scripts instead
Some children who are described as nonverbal actually produce lots of sounds and whole memorised phrases — lines from cartoons, songs, things you said last week — used with feeling but not flexibly. This is gestalt language processing, and it is a genuine route to language, not noise. It needs a therapist trained to work with scripts rather than drill single words. That is a Starwalkers speciality: see gestalt language therapy in Dubai and our guide to children who repeat words and phrases.
What therapy looks like at Starwalkers
Who provides this at Starwalkers
AAC and gestalt language therapy are our clinic’s specialities, not a sideline. Nazma Sheikh, our founder and speech-language therapist, is NLA-trained (Natural Language Acquisition) and the first certified NLA-trained therapist for Gestalt Language Development in Asia. Mizha Fathima, SLP, holds AVAZ AAC Professional Training and NLA Professional Competence Training. Shadha Shebin, Senior SLT, and Nasreen, SLP, both work with AAC daily. All our therapists are DHA-licensed. We are neurodiversity-affirming and do not use ABA: no compliance training, no withholding, no hand-over-hand prompting. The clinic is in Al Razi Medical Complex, Dubai Healthcare City, open Monday to Sunday, with online therapy available across the UAE and internationally. Sessions are AED 150–199, with a 10-session package at AED 1,999.
What you can do at home this week
- Respond to everything. A glance, a pull towards the fridge, a script from a cartoon: treat each as communication and answer its meaning. Being understood is what motivates more communication.
- Talk to your child normally. Narrate, joke, explain. Understanding usually runs ahead of speaking, and children who are spoken to like thinkers behave like thinkers.
- Model without demanding. Say or tap the word for them; never make the juice conditional on saying “juice”. Withholding teaches frustration, not words.
- Follow their interests. Language grows fastest inside whatever your child already loves, spinning wheels and all.
- Do not wait for speech to “come on its own”. If your child is past two with no reliable words, book an assessment now. Support started early has the most to work with.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a nonverbal autistic child learn to talk?
Many do. Research on autistic children with few words at age four shows a substantial proportion go on to develop phrases or fluent speech later, and the strongest predictors are communication support and language input, not pressure to perform. Others remain non-speaking and become skilled communicators through AAC. Both outcomes start with the same step: giving your child a working way to communicate now.
Will AAC stop my child from speaking?
No. This is the most studied question in the field, and the evidence consistently shows AAC supports spoken language rather than hindering it. Children using AAC hear every word modelled as they use it, communicate more, and are less frustrated — all of which help speech, and none of which harm it.
What age is right to start AAC?
There is no minimum age and no requirement to “try speech first”. If there is a gap between what your child wants to say and what they can say, AAC can close it now. Toddlers can and do use picture systems and simple devices.
Do we need an autism diagnosis before starting therapy?
No. No referral, diagnosis or doctor’s letter is needed for a speech and language or AAC assessment in Dubai, and therapy does not pause while a diagnostic assessment is underway. If a formal diagnosis would help your family, we will tell you honestly and point you to the right professionals — see autism assessment in Dubai.
Which AAC app or device is best?
The one your child actually uses, which is impossible to know from reviews alone. Motor skills, vision, language level and motivation all shape the choice, which is why we trial systems with your child in real play before recommending anything. An assessment first is almost always cheaper than an abandoned device.
How much does this cost in Dubai?
At Starwalkers, sessions are AED 150–199 and a 10-session package is AED 1,999. The AAC assessment is priced as an assessment session, and we will tell you the full picture before you book anything. See speech therapy costs in Dubai.
Can this be done online?
Yes. AAC coaching and gestalt language therapy work well online, with the therapist coaching you and your child at home. Families across the UAE and internationally use our online therapy this way.
