Echolalia Therapy in Dubai
Your child’s repeating is language. The right therapy starts from that, not against it.
Echolalia, the repeating of words, phrases, TV lines and songs, is meaningful language, not a habit to remove. Starwalkers Clinic in Dubai Healthcare City provides echolalia therapy from speech therapists trained in the Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) framework, helping children move from scripts to flexible language of their own. We see children in the clinic and online, and no referral or diagnosis is needed to start.
What is echolalia?
Echolalia is when a child repeats language they have heard rather than building sentences word by word. To a parent it sounds like copying, but it is your child talking with the language their brain has stored. It comes in two forms, and many children do both.
Immediate echolalia
Your child says back what they have just heard, straight away and often in the same tone. You ask “Do you want juice?” and hear “Do you want juice?” in reply. The repeat usually carries a real message, most often “yes” or “I heard you”.
Delayed echolalia
Your child replays language from hours, days or weeks ago: a whole scene from a favourite show, a song, or something you said last Tuesday. The line often appears at moments that match the feeling it was stored with, such as a comfort phrase when they fall over.
Both kinds are common in toddlers, and for some children they remain the main way of talking well past age three. That is not a dead end. It is a recognised route into language, and it responds well to the right support. We describe what this looks like day to day in our parent guide, my child repeats TV lines and everything I say.
Why therapy for echolalia looks different here
Older approaches treated echolalia as a behaviour to reduce: ignore the script, insist on the “correct” answer, reward single words. At Starwalkers we never ignore or try to extinguish repeating, because the repeating is your child’s current language. Take it away and they have less, not more.
Instead, your child’s scripts are the starting material. Our speech therapists work within the Natural Language Acquisition framework, the evidence-informed description of how script-learners (therapists call them gestalt language processors) develop language. You can read the full approach on our gestalt language therapy page. In brief, children move through predictable stages:
Therapy meets your child at their current stage and models the next one, through play they already love, with no drilling and no pressure to perform.
What does an echolalia assessment involve?
An assessment at our Dubai Healthcare City clinic is play-based and relaxed, and parents stay in the room throughout. The therapist is not testing your child against a checklist of single words, because standard checklists were not designed for script-learners. Instead the assessment includes:
- A detailed conversation with you about your child’s scripts, where they come from and what you think they mean
- A natural language sample gathered through play, recording the scripts and part-scripts your child actually uses
- Analysis of that sample to identify your child’s current NLA stage
- Observation of how your child connects, plays and regulates, in whichever languages your family speaks
- A written report with your child’s stage, therapy recommendations and strategies to use at home the same week
A hearing test is a sensible first step for any speech or language concern, and we will say so if your child has not had one. Bilingualism does not cause echolalia or speech delay, so keep speaking the languages your family is comfortable in.
Is echolalia a sign of autism?
Echolalia is common in autistic children, and many autistic children learn language through scripts. It is also common in non-autistic children, especially those with a strong ear for melody and rhythm. On its own, repeating is not a diagnosis of anything. What matters is whether your child’s language is moving forward over time and whether they can share what they mean.
In the UAE, a formal autism diagnosis is made by a DHA-licensed developmental paediatrician, child psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. Our speech therapists assess language and communication, support your child regardless of diagnosis, and will tell you honestly if a referral is worth considering. If autism is part of your family’s picture, our autism support page explains how we help.

When to book echolalia therapy in Dubai
Repeating on its own is not a reason to worry. It is worth an assessment if most of your child’s talking is still whole scripts after age three, if the scripts have not changed in six months, or if frustration is building because you cannot work out what they mean.
You do not need a referral or a diagnosis to book with us. Starwalkers is a DHA-licensed clinic in Dubai Healthcare City offering speech therapy in the clinic and online across the UAE. Therapy for echolalia sits within our gestalt language therapy programme, and our pricing is published openly: AED 1,999 for a 10-session package, with full details on our speech therapy cost page. Some children who script also benefit from AAC therapy in Dubai — pictures, boards or a talking device used alongside speech, never instead of it. Message us on WhatsApp at +971 56 448 1678 with a few examples of what your child says, or book an assessment online.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is echolalia normal?
Yes. Most toddlers repeat as part of learning to talk, and for many children repeating is the main route into language for a while. It becomes worth assessing when a child over three still talks mostly in whole scripts, or when the scripts are not changing over time. Even then it is a sign of how your child learns, not something wrong with them.
Should I stop my child repeating?
No. Repeating is how your child is communicating right now, and stopping it takes away their language before they have a replacement. Acknowledge the script, work out what it means, and model short natural phrases they can borrow. Children move on from scripts when they are supported, not when they are corrected.
What is the difference between echolalia and gestalt language processing?
Echolalia is the repeating itself: the words, phrases and songs your child says back. Gestalt language processing is the way of learning language in chunks that produces it. A gestalt language processor stores whole phrases with meaning attached and later breaks them into flexible language, and echolalia is what that learning style sounds like from the outside.
Do you treat echolalia at Starwalkers?
Yes. Our speech therapists are trained in the Natural Language Acquisition framework and support scripting children every day, in the clinic in Dubai Healthcare City and online across the UAE. Therapy starts from your child’s scripts and helps them build flexible language of their own.
How much does echolalia therapy cost in Dubai?
Echolalia therapy at Starwalkers costs AED 1,999 for a 10-session package, and an assessment comes first so therapy can be matched to your child’s stage. Full pricing is published on our speech therapy cost page, with no hidden fees.
Is echolalia a sign of autism?
It can be part of the picture for autistic children, and it is also common in children who are not autistic. Repeating by itself is not a diagnosis. A speech therapist can assess your child’s language and communication; a formal autism diagnosis in the UAE comes from a DHA-licensed developmental paediatrician, child psychiatrist or clinical psychologist.
Do I need a referral or diagnosis to start?
No. You can book directly with us, with or without a diagnosis, and many families come to us simply because their child scripts and they want to understand it. A hearing test is a sensible first step for any speech or language concern if your child has not had one recently.
