How to Get an Autism Diagnosis in Dubai (and What to Do While You Wait)
Who can diagnose autism in the UAE, where parents go, how long it takes, and why your child can start support today without a diagnosis.
In the UAE, a formal autism diagnosis is made by a DHA-licensed developmental paediatrician, child psychiatrist or clinical psychologist — usually after a multidisciplinary assessment. Speech and occupational therapists like our team at Starwalkers carry out the communication, sensory and play assessments that feed into that picture, and we can begin supporting your child straight away, before any diagnosis exists.
You Do Not Need a Diagnosis to Begin
This is the most important thing on this page, so we will say it first.
Many families in Dubai spend months on a waiting list for a diagnostic appointment, believing that nothing can happen until the report arrives. That wait is often the most valuable window your child will have — and losing it costs more than the diagnosis gains.
At Starwalkers, you do not need a referral, a diagnosis, or a perfectly worded question to book. If something about your child’s communication, play, sensory responses or development is on your mind, that is enough. We assess what your child can do and what would help, and we start there.
Who Can Diagnose Autism in Dubai?
Parents are often told conflicting things about this, so here is the clear version.
The most common route in the UAE. Reviews developmental history, observes your child, and coordinates input from other professionals before making a diagnosis.
Administers standardised diagnostic tools such as the ADOS-2 and ADI-R, alongside cognitive and adaptive assessments.
Diagnoses autism and co-occurring conditions, and is the route where medication may become part of the wider picture.
We do not issue the diagnostic label. We assess communication, language processing, sensory regulation, play and daily function — and our reports form part of the evidence a diagnosing clinician relies on.
A good diagnostic process is multidisciplinary. If a single professional offers to diagnose your child in one short appointment with no input from anyone else, that is worth questioning.
Where Can I Get My Child Assessed for Autism in Dubai?
Parents in Dubai usually take one of three routes. All of them lead to a DHA-licensed clinician making the diagnosis; they differ in cost, waiting time and how much is included.
Dubai Autism Center offers diagnostic assessment, and Al Jalila Children’s Specialty Hospital has developmental paediatrics. Waiting times can be long, and some services prioritise UAE nationals, so ask about eligibility when you call.
Available in Dubai Healthcare City and across the city, usually with shorter waits. A full multidisciplinary assessment is typically several appointments and commonly runs into several thousand dirhams. Ask whether the ADOS-2, the written report and a feedback session are included in the fee.
A general paediatrician can rule out hearing and medical causes and refer you on. Many insurers require this referral before they will consider covering any part of a diagnostic assessment.
Whichever route you choose, start speech and occupational therapy support at the same time, not afterwards. A Starwalkers assessment can usually be arranged within days and our report becomes part of the diagnostic evidence.
What a Starwalkers Assessment Involves
We start with your history, your worries and your priorities. You know your child better than any assessment tool does, and what you have noticed matters.
No compliance testing, no sitting your child at a table to perform. We follow their lead and assess what emerges — how they communicate, how they regulate, what motivates them, where the genuine barriers are.
Standardised assessment has its place, but it is one input, not the verdict. We use it where it adds information and set it aside where it would only measure how well a child tolerates being tested.
You receive a report written to be read by you, not only by other professionals — plus a session where we talk it through, answer questions, and agree what happens next.
What We Assess
- How your child communicates now — including scripting, echolalia and gestalt language processing, which are frequently misread as meaningless repetition when they are in fact language in development.
- Whether your child is a gestalt or analytic language processor — this single distinction changes the entire therapy plan, and it is missed in most standard assessments.
- Whether AAC would help — for children who are non-speaking, minimally speaking, or whose speech is unreliable under stress.
- Sensory processing and regulation — what your child seeks, avoids, and how that shapes their day.
- Play, social connection and self-advocacy — assessed as your child’s own way of relating, not as a deficit against a neurotypical checklist.
- Daily living, motor skills and school readiness — through our occupational therapy team.
- Feeding and mealtimes, where that is part of the picture.
What Parents Usually Notice First
Families rarely arrive with a clinical question. They arrive with a feeling. These are the observations that most often bring parents to us:
Your child repeats lines from cartoons, songs or films instead of using single words.
Your child does not consistently respond to their name, though their hearing has been tested and is fine.
Words appeared and then seemed to fade away.
Your child covers their ears at everyday sounds, or seeks constant movement and pressure.
Play looks different from other children’s — lining up, sorting, deep focus on one thing.
Nursery has raised a concern, or a relative has said something that stayed with you.
None of these is a diagnosis. Every one of them is a good enough reason to ask.
Our Approach to Assessment
We assess to understand a child, not to catalogue what they cannot do. A neurodiversity-affirming assessment records strengths, interests, communication style and sensory needs alongside the areas where support would genuinely help — and it never treats a child’s natural way of playing, moving or communicating as a behaviour to eliminate.
We do not use ABA. Our work is child-led, play-based, relationship-first and family-centred, and we will always tell you honestly when something is outside our scope.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Starwalkers diagnose my child with autism?
No. A formal autism diagnosis in the UAE is made by a DHA-licensed developmental paediatrician, child psychiatrist or clinical psychologist. We carry out speech, language, communication, sensory and occupational therapy assessments, and our reports are commonly used as part of a diagnostic process. We can also point you toward diagnosing clinicians in Dubai when you want to pursue that route.
Do I need a diagnosis before starting therapy?
No. You do not need a referral or a diagnosis to book an assessment or begin therapy with us. Support is based on what your child needs right now, not on which label they have been given.
At what age can autism be identified?
Reliable identification is often possible from around 18 to 24 months, and experienced clinicians frequently recognise signs earlier. There is no age at which it becomes too early to ask a question or to begin support — and early support does not require a confirmed diagnosis.
How long does an autism assessment take in Dubai?
A full diagnostic process usually runs across several appointments with more than one professional and can take weeks to months depending on the provider’s waiting list. A Starwalkers speech and occupational therapy assessment is faster and can usually be arranged within days.
What is the ADOS-2?
The ADOS-2 is the most widely used structured observation tool for autism assessment. A trained clinician plays and talks with your child through set activities and scores how they communicate and interact. It is one part of a diagnosis, alongside your child’s history and reports from therapists, never the whole picture.
My child was diagnosed abroad. Is that recognised in Dubai?
Reports from overseas are generally accepted by therapy providers and can usually be used to begin support immediately. Schools and government services in the UAE sometimes ask for a local assessment as well. Bring what you have to your first appointment and we will tell you what, if anything, is likely to be needed.
Will you tell me if you think my child is autistic?
We will be honest with you about what we observe, what it may indicate, and whether we think a diagnostic assessment would be worth pursuing. What we will not do is give you a label we are not qualified to give, or leave you guessing about what we have seen.
Is autism assessment covered by insurance in the UAE?
Coverage varies considerably between insurers and policies, and many plans treat developmental assessment and therapy differently from general medical care. Message us with your provider and plan and we will tell you what we know.
Do you offer online assessment?
Yes — for families outside Dubai or unable to travel, we offer online assessment and parent coaching with the same team behind our Dubai Healthcare City clinic. Some elements, particularly sensory and motor assessment, are more complete in person.
