My 3-Year-Old Has Started Stuttering: When to Worry and What Helps (Dubai)

My 3-Year-Old Has Started Stuttering. Should I Worry?

Repeating sounds, getting stuck on words, or suddenly going quiet mid-sentence is common between 2 and 5, and it is frightening to watch. Here is how to tell ordinary bumpy speech from stuttering that needs support.

Many children between 2 and 5 go through a phase of bumpy speech while their language grows faster than their speech system can keep up, and most come through it. Book a speech and language assessment if the stuttering has lasted more than six months, started after age 3 and a half, runs in the family, comes with visible tension or struggle, or if your child is avoiding talking or upset by it. At Starwalkers Clinic in Dubai Healthcare City, DHA-licensed speech-language therapists assess and support young children who stutter using play-based, parent-led approaches. Sessions are AED 160–199. No referral is needed.

Ordinary bumpy speech or stuttering?

Usually part of normal development

  • Repeating whole words or phrases: “I want, I want, I want the car”
  • Pauses, “um” and “er”, restarting a sentence
  • Comes and goes over days or weeks, often worse when tired or excited
  • No tension, no awareness, child carries on happily

Worth an assessment

  • Repeating parts of words or single sounds: “c-c-c-car”, “mu-mu-mummy”
  • Stretching sounds: “mmmmmummy”
  • Getting stuck with no sound coming out, mouth open
  • Visible effort: blinking, face or neck tension, stamping, looking away
  • Child says “I can’t say it”, avoids words, or stops talking in groups
  • Has lasted more than 6 months, or started after 3 and a half
  • A parent, sibling or grandparent stuttered

Will they grow out of it?

Many will. Roughly three in four children who start stuttering as preschoolers stop within a couple of years, most without therapy. The children less likely to recover on their own are those who have been stuttering longer than a year, started later, have a family history of persistent stuttering, are boys, or whose stuttering has tension and struggle in it. None of these is a verdict, but together they are the reason not to simply wait. Early support in the preschool years is when therapy for stuttering works best and is easiest for the child, because we work mostly through you and through play rather than asking a 3-year-old to “practise”.

What to do at home starting today

1

Slow yourself down, not your child

Do not say “slow down” or “take a breath”. Instead, slow your own speech, pause more, and leave a second before you answer. Children match the pace around them.

2

Listen to what, not how

Keep eye contact, wait for them to finish, and respond to the content. Do not finish their words or ask them to say it again.

3

Cut the questions

Rapid questions put pressure on speech. Comment and describe instead, and give your child time when they do talk.

4

Five minutes of one-to-one, every day

Phone away, child chooses the activity, you follow. Calm, unhurried talking time is the single most useful thing a parent can do.

5

If they mention it, acknowledge it

“Yes, that word got a bit stuck, that happens sometimes” is better than pretending not to notice. Shame grows in silence; matter-of-factness takes the fear out.

What therapy for a young child who stutters looks like

For children under about 6, therapy is largely done with and through parents. After a play-based assessment, we look together at what makes your child’s speech smoother and bumpier (fatigue, excitement, pace at home, competition for talking time with siblings) and coach you in specific changes to how conversation runs at home. Some children benefit from a structured programme where parents give gentle, specific feedback during daily play; we guide you through it week by week. The child experiences it as special time with you, not as treatment. Sessions are one-to-one, in Dubai Healthcare City or online, and we work in blocks with a review at the end of each. If your child also has unclear speech or late language, we assess and plan for those at the same time rather than treating them in isolation; see unclear speech and speech delay therapy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is stuttering at 3 normal?

Bumpy speech is common at 3, when language is growing fast. Whole-word repetitions without tension usually settle. Sound repetitions, stretching, getting stuck, visible effort, or stuttering lasting more than six months are the signs to book an assessment.

Did I cause my child’s stuttering?

No. Stuttering is not caused by parenting, bilingualism, a fright, or a new sibling, although stress and excitement can make it more noticeable. It is a difference in how speech is coordinated, and it tends to run in families.

Should I tell my child to slow down or take a breath?

No. Instructions about how to talk add pressure and rarely help. Slow your own speech, pause more, and give your child unhurried time instead.

How long should I wait before seeing a speech therapist?

If stuttering has lasted more than six months, started after 3 and a half, runs in the family, involves tension or struggle, or is upsetting your child, book now. If none of those apply, use the home strategies for two to three months and book if it does not ease.

Can speech therapy cure stuttering?

For preschool children, early therapy gives the best chance of stuttering resolving fully, and many children do become fluent. For children who continue to stutter, therapy builds easier, more confident speaking and removes the fear and avoidance that do the real damage.

How much does stuttering therapy cost in Dubai?

At Starwalkers, sessions are AED 160–199, or AED 1,999 for a 10-session package, published openly. No referral is needed.

Does speaking two languages make stuttering worse?

Bilingualism does not cause stuttering. Keep speaking the languages your family speaks; what helps is a calmer pace and more unhurried talking time in whichever language you use.

Not sure if it is a phase?

Send us a 20-second voice note or video of your child talking, with their age. A speech-language therapist will tell you honestly whether to wait or to book.
